It’s not too often that I have to explain myself with my drawing, so I will use process shots to help me! You could also consider this a tutorial if it helps??
I usually sketch outline my drawing first, with the head and body and yadda yadda. with the body I make the frame EXTREMELY vague but thick becuhs it give me a better idea to how much fat I wanna give little dude Eren. The final drawing doesn’t always follow the first sketch, and tends to be smaller than what I planned. Proportions of infants are typically larger heads and wide bellies with little appendages
and then I go along with the face. eyes and eyebrows go first. babies have enlarged features! like big eyes, big ears, and big fat cheeks! but since they do there are things that are squished like their lips. how big the eyes are is important, because I like children with a lot of wonder, which is seen usually in the eyes. I don’t add shine too often to the eyes because i don’t think it looks nice ):
next is the body. I really don’t know how to explain this part very well. I like making my bodies have a lot of “goopy” texture to their clothing, in other words lots of folds. The trick is to make the figure as puny as possible. Especially with my baby Eren, I don’t make is arms and legs too long to help compact him into tiny size. It helps to not completely draw hands either, instead drawing little stupid fists. To finish off his head I just draw some crown of messy hair lol
I got rid of the sketch layer when I screenshotted this, but i ended up making him shorter than the original outline.
I’m not too consistent with the shape of eren’s face and eyes as long as they stay chubby and large. His eyes are really just large black holes, but where/how I place his eyewhites (or the little curve attached to the black holes) is what would determine his emotion. Course his eyebrows are key, too! His design is incredibly simple, i think, so it leaves room for dynamic face manipulations. The faces he makes are highly based off of my little baby sister and the children in Ghibli films!
I hope this was helpful!
