So You Want to Art?
All of the tutorials, references, artwork, etc. featured here were not created by me. This is just an area for people to find anything related to helping others improve their art skills.
Please do not hesitate to submit or notify me of resources and tutorials for anything relating to art you can imagine will help people in their improvement of art. Since art is such a subjective and vague term, this can mean anything from writing to cosplay to cooking to even home construction.

Anonymous whispered: I'm honestly crying because I just now realized my anatomy is such shit and I don't know how to keep it cartoony but accurate at the same time… Any tips?

scotchtapeofficial:

tamascotchi-deactivated20190101:

everyone should start w a basic grasp of anatomy before delving into stylized cartoony stuff, but its actually not nearly as hard as it looks/sounds. figure drawing from reference pictures is a lot easier than making up cartoonish styles in ur head, because the learning curve is so sharp.

just start drawing people you see- watch youtube videos that show candid crowds, pause it for a bit and give yourself like 1-5 minutes to quickly draw the pose and figure, and then let it go and move on to the next pose. make em vary in size from whole page to half page to ¼ page, knock out like 10 in one session, and after a few sessions i guarantee youll notice a difference. focus first on the angle & twist of the torso, and then on the pose of the arms & legs, and THEN on fleshing it out/lightly shading. its really easy to pick up, and once youre comfortable with it, you can try simplifying your linework a ton and exaggerating shit to get cartoon-y looks you enjoy that actually look 1000x better because the human eye/brain can make way more sense of them.

image

if you cant read my handwriting:
no reference “cartoon-y” -> life drawing from reference -> simplify (less lines, fewer details) -> simplify into shapes, exaggerate proportions -> (when to stop simplifying is up to you!)

this is a good site for references (though not a lot of variety if you have more than one or two specifications in the drop down menu), and this is the picture i referenced

Anonymous whispered: how do you make ur art look like its glowing?? it's gorgeous!!

vetyr:

I’ll give you a weird secret.  After you put the glowing object on a dark background, surround the white parts with a halo of highly saturated color.  Observe:

image

It doesn’t have to be that blatant- smaller outlines of color, blended properly with the background, can make an equally effective glow-y look :)

Anonymous whispered: I'm kinda ashamed to ask this, but could you make a tutorial on how to draw hands? ;A;

lem0uro:

omg dont be ashamed at all!! Hands are generally tough to get used to, lots of artists struggle with it! so dont be ashamed i feel you.

and I actually have made a hand anatomy guide before in fact! If you want to get better at drawing hands I def recommend you learn the basic anatomy first. Please check out the ones I made, I try to make it simple and easy to understand:

There’s my guide to the anatomy, but here’s some more tips that I’ve noted to myself that I’d like to include

image

First off, I’d like to just note on the fingers: if you pay close attention to your own hand, you may notice the fingers are ever ever so slightly curved inward. It’s a very subtle detail, but I noticed that, despite how slight it is, it can make a hand look more lively, and less stiff.

image

Second, the “M” on the palm! Your hand moves in many ways, and because it does it creates creases in your hand. The most prominent creases appear to make an M shape; this is handy to remember for what I’m going to talk about next. (It also could be a “W” I guess, or to be more specific a “ )X( “; just think of it in whatever way helps you remember!)

image

SO now that you see the M, draw your hand as a basic blocked shape and add your details. As you do, you can see that the M divides the palm into four basic parts!

image
image

When the hand moves, parts A, B, or C of the palm, alone or in different combos, will create the general poses that the hands do normally. These parts are the parts that move, with D being stationary, no matter what!

Here’s a chart of all the possible combos. Once you have down what part of the hand moves for a certain pose, you can change up the fingers and tweak it a bit to do what you need to make it more specific!

image

This is simply my method of drawing hands. God knows there are hundreds of tutorials out there by other artists, but personally, this way helps me the best (after learning the anatomy first).

This way I can divide the hand and combine the parts in any such way I need!

Hands take a lot of effort to grapple, and you need to practice them a lot, especially foreshortening of the hand; that’s really something you need to learn through your own studies. Look at your own hands, draw hands from life, from magazines, shows, comics; just draw hands! You’ll eventually figure out a method that works best for you. So to get better at drawing hands; draw hands!! And don’t stress over it, have fun with it!

My old tutorial! Wanna share it with you)

Oh, this is infinitely superior to the usual ‘uhhh if u make ur character a triangle face we wont trust them’ crap.

Anonymous whispered: your drawings is very beautiful, and you realy inspire me but, how you draw hair?

loojii:

Thank you ! Here is a tutorial on how I draw hair ~

Anonymous whispered: could u do a tutorial on shading? how do u get your lines so straight? im a huge fan of ur art and i would love to learn how !!

Shading (without a specific light source)

1. Flat Colors

image

2. Add a lighter color or a darker color to the original color in order to add more value to the flat colors.

image

If you look at the image below it shows the comparisons of the new color that was added to the original color in order to see the difference between the two.

image

3. Add the shadows in order to show which object is above another object. To create the shadows I used the colors shown below and set them to ‘multiply’. This adds more depth to your work.

image

4. Use ‘multiply’ to give more emphasis on certain aspects on your work. Like for example the leaves.

image

5. Add the finishing touches and you are done!

image

Shading (with a specific light source)

All you gotta do is determine where the light source is. In the image below, the light source is the sun. The little sun will guide you on which parts should be illuminated or shaded.

Here are some examples:

In order to see the difference that shading can do, here is a process gif!!!

As for lines, I believe that everyone’s style is different. Some choose to do little strokes while others do just one big stroke. As for me, I just do one big stroke in order to maintain the fluidity and consistency of the line.
Here is a picture of comparison:

image

If you want smooth lines then just try and draw it in one swift movement. If you don’t get it right, don’t erase the part that went wrong (because it will be obvious that it’s no longer one line but 2 lines because the continuity of the original line and the new line won’t be the same). You have to redo the whole line from the beginning.

If you practice this a lot you will notice that your lines will be better and at the same time, you will work faster because you don’t have to do so many strokes. Btw  when you draw the line do it fast, like really fast, so that you won’t encounter any mistakes.

Just draw a lot and you will get the hang of it and I also hope you know that each artist has their own style. So maybe the one swift stroke works for me but the many short strokes work for you. Just draw in a way that’s more comfortable to you. Anyway, hope this was helpful and have a good day!

20 ways to draw a more consistent character

teesshinystuff:

TAKEN FROM HERE: https://sites.google.com/site/houseotwisted/junk/20drawings

1. Draw the most common appearance for your character. This is your comfort zone. (Color)

2. Draw your character from the front, the side, and the back. This is something called a ‘turn sheet’. It’s a little boring to do, but will be very helpful to you in the future to have on hand.

3. Draw your character from the front, the side, and the back, but have them in nothing but their undies at most. This is to show off how your character is built. Drawing nothing but a straight pant-leg with no structure under it is no way to learn! (Skip this if your character doesn’t wear clothes)

4. Draw your character at three different ages than they currently are. (Must be noticeably different. No ages: 4, 5, and 6, etc.) Color one of them.

5. BANG! Your character just heard a loud noise right behind them. Draw their reaction!

6. Draw a bird’s eye view of your character.

7. Draw your character feeling very happy. Show body language.

8. Draw your character feeling very angry. Ditto.

9. Draw your character feeling very sad. You know the drill.

10. Draw your character with a different body type than they usually have. This helps you map distinguishing features onto different ‘templates’.

11. Draw your character if they were the opposite gender.

12. Draw your character as a different species than they normally are.

13. Somebody has just handed your character a live duck. Draw their reaction. Keep them in character.

14. Mary Sue the HELL out of your character. (Due to being asked “What is Mary Sue?” several times, I have included a link to the evil that is Sue: [Click if you dare.]

15. Draw your character lifting something heavy. (no magic allowed!)

16. Draw your character in an opposite role than they appear in your story/continuity.

17. Draw your character doing something they enjoy.

18. Draw your character doing something they do NOT enjoy.

19. Draw your character in a dynamic pose that is not a profile shot (from the side).

20. Draw the most common appearance for your character. Color it. (Pssst! See if it improved from the first one you drew. I bet it did!)

a tutorial no one asked for

soras-majestic-butt:

okay so i’ve been trying some things out and if there’s something you don’t know how to draw (like say dogs, for example) and you can’t seem to get it right by just looking at a reference image, I highly recommend this:

tracing.

DONT CRUCIFY ME YET. now this word seems extremely taboo to an artist because no one wants to be accused of tracing right!!! but it may actually help you to simply get started.

take a reference image (ref’d from here):

image

lower the opacity of the reference layer. make a new layer and start tracing over it (dark colors are most useful here)

image

memorize each line you make and how it all comes together. make notes!

image

after a while (and many different references) you should remember how to do it freehanded! add in a dash of your own style anddd

image

viola! using the notes and what i remembered from the traced refs i was able to finally freehand a doggy that actually looks like a dog (hopefully)!

obviously i don’t recommend posting your traced references and calling them your own, but this method could help you with poses, expressions, anatomy, everything! it’s a method i recently broke down to use but I plan on utilizing it more often! happy drawing!

tips for novice artists

spookyoeve:

kazuichiiiii:

  • eyeballs are 1 eyeball apart
  • legs are about the height of your head and torso combined
  • height = armspan
  • arms are about ¾-4/5 the length of legs
  • hands are about 1/3 the length/width of your wrist to your elbow
  • your face should be about 4.5 eyeballs wide (3.5 if anime)
  • your face should be about 6 eyeballs long (3.5-4 if anime)
  • your eyes are in the middle of your head
  • muscles arent just bumps on arms
  • fat isnt just a balloon belly and skinny everything else
  • boobs are not anything like waterballoons
  • hair is more fluid than you think
  • USE REFERENCES!!
  • but dont copy!
  • dear lordy dont shade with black
  • draw more than normal standing poses at a ¾ view
  • draw more than one character/bodytype/thing
  • watch speedpaints on youtube
  • digital artists: SAVE. OFTEN. AND. ALOT.
  • experiment with different brushes
  • try to finish an artwork in a single session, if you have the energy/time
  • remember, you won’t be amazing the first time you draw
  • practice makes perfect!
  • draw what makes YOU happy!
  • remember to take criticism politely
  • however, you don’t have to be polite to people who are downright rude
  • send me an ask if you want to know more!
